What is Netflix anyway?

\nNetflix is the world’s leading internet subscription service for TV shows and movies. It has over 57 million subscribers across 50 countries. In fact, it is so popular in the US, that 30% of the country’s total internet traffic in peak times is just from Netflix!\n

How does Netflix work?

\nPut simply, with Netflix, you can watch what you want, when you want.\n\nYou simply select your favourite TV show or movie and stream it to any internet-connected device with a Netflix application - your TV, computer, tablet or smartphone.\n\nPause, rewind and forward at your leisure. And never sit through an ad break again.\n

Is streaming TV and movie content new in Australia?

\nNo, it’s not. Established service providers such as Ezyflix and Quickflix have been here for several years. But 2015 is the year for all the big players.\n\nThe Australian launch of Netflix was closely preceded by the launch of Presto (a collaboration between Foxtel and Channel 7) and Stan (a Channel 9 and Fairfax partnership).\n\nHowever, Netflix has the advantage of strong brand recognition in Australia, largely due to news coverage around many Australians illegally - or ‘creatively’ - accessing the US service before it officially arrived.\n

What does Netflix mean for the free-to-air and pay television market?

\nThere’s no denying that the arrival of Netflix in Australia is part of a long-term shift in viewing habits. And that means Australia's free-to-air and pay television operators are now under legitimate threat.\n\nIn the next 10-20 years, very few of us will be ‘tuning in’ at particular times to watch our favourite shows. According to Netflix Chief Executive, Reed Hastings ‘…most viewing in most countries will be over the internet.’\n\nThe evolution is no different to the music industry. We’ve moving from owning (LPs, tapes, CDs)… to downloading (MP3s)… to streaming (Spotfiy, Pandora, GooglePlay).\n

What will you be able to watch on Netflix?

\nAccording to Netflix, Australians will be able to enjoy a whole world of entertainment. Award-winning TV series, documentaries, kids programming, movie blockbusters – you name it.\n\nBut unless you’re a House of Cards binge-watcher, you may want to do your research. According to critics, Australian Netflix service has almost 7,000 fewer titles than it offers in the US. What’s more, with 1,250 titles on offer in Australia, Netflix offers the fewest choices when compared to Stan, Presto and Ezyflix. Quickflix has the largest selection with 2,300 titles.\n

So how much does Netflix cost?

\nNetflix is offering the basic standard definition service at $8.99 per month. The two-stream high-definition plan costs $11.99. And four-stream 4K ultra-definition plan is $14.99.\n\nComparatively, Stan offers high definition streaming at $10 a month and. And Presto, which only offers content in standard definition, charges $9.99 per month.\n\nBut streaming video costs more than your monthly subscription. It’s also about the data you consume through your internet plan and your broadband capabilities.\n

Is Netflix or any other internet subscription service right for you?

\nIf you answer ‘yes’ to one or more of the following questions, it may be worth considering.\n
    \n\t
  • Does your busy lifestyle prevent you from watching TV at conventional times?
  • \n\t
  • Are the viewing choices on your Foxtel subscription getting limited and repetitive?
  • \n\t
  • Do you crave top quality, high-definition viewing?
  • \n\t
  • Are you fed up with ‘no escape’ television advertising?
  • \n\t
  • Do you enjoy ‘binge-watching’ quality TV shows?
  • \n\t
  • Do you already have an Apple TV or LG TV?
  • \n

"Description": "We all know the frustration of trying to talk to someone while they’re continually checking their phone. On the rudeness scale, it’s probably surpassed by only one thing: checking the time.\n\n\n\nWell, thanks to Apple, you can now offend your friends in one fell swoop - with the all new Apple Watch.\n\nApple's first wearable gadget is launching in Australia on 24 April 2015. Starting at AUD$499, the Apple Watch shares many functionalities with the iPhone: it receives calls, displays emails, stores music and receives social media notifications.\n\nSo if constantly reaching into your pocket for your device is driving you batty, problem solved.\n\nBut if that’s not enough of a reason to purchase Apple’s latest gadget, we’re afraid you’re out of luck. Because we can’t think of many more.\n\nIn fact, we can only think of reasons why NOT to get one. Here’s just five of them.\n

1. You need an iPhone to operate it

\nThe Apple Watch is not self-sufficient. You need an iPhone (5c, 5s, 6 or 6 Plus) to operate most of its functionalities.\n\nThat’s because many Apple Watch apps are just displays for things running from your iPhone. And many key features aren't available if it’s not paired to an iOS device. For example, it doesn’t have its own GPS receiver or camera – which means it can’t map your movements or take happy cat snaps all by itself.\n\nIt would be remiss of us not to mention that the Apple Watch does have some apps and functionalities that can operate without an iPhone. Like telling the time, for example.\n

2. You’ll also need an iPhone (or a Swiss bank account) to afford it

\nAlthough the entry-level model may not seem exorbitant at AUD$499, it needs an iPhone to operate it. And at the other end of the spectrum, the top-tier 18-carat gold edition will set you back around AUD$24,000.\n\nAlthough many of us prefer to spend that sum of money on a car or mortgage, some families consider an expensive watch a good investment. Their Cartier, Rolex or Bvlgari is passed from generation to generation – growing in value and sentimentality over time.\n\nBut a $24,000 Apple Watch? We’re not convinced. Surely it’ll be a matter of time until the next version is released, demoting your current model to the bottom drawer alongside your once-cherished iPod nano and iPhone 4.\n

3. You’ll have another gadget to charge at night. High five to that.

\nIn the good old Nokia days, we only charged our phones once or twice a week. But thanks to Apple, we’re now all too happy to charge them every night – or even more often.\n\nWill Apple really be able to convince us to charge our watch every night too?\n\nThe Apple Watch comes with about 18 hours of battery life over a normal day. So you’ll definitely need to find a home for it on your multiple adapter when you tuck into bed each night.\n\nWhat’s next then? Charging our shoes, belts and eyeglasses? (Oh, wait a minute. Google actually had a go at that last one, didn’t they?)\n

4. Perfect for (very rich and naive) fitness junkies

\nAccording to Apple, their watch is the perfect companion for health and fitness junkies. But is it enough of a selling point to clinch the deal on its own?\n\nUnlike any other device, the Apple Watch can measure all the ways we move - such as walking the dog, climbing the stairs or playing with our kids. Wait a minute. Aren’t there plenty of fitness bands out there (such as Fitbit) that already do this - for a fraction of the price?\n\nOkay, so the Apple Watch can also keep track of when we stand up, encouraging us to keep moving. Phew. There’s really nothing else that can do\n

5. It’s not waterproof

\nSo we’ve already established that your Apple Watch will help you keep track of your fitness activities. Unless, that is, those activities involve water.\n\nThe Apple Watch is water-resistant, but not water-proof. And that means you shouldn’t even wear in shower - let alone go swimming with it.\n\nNo doubt future models of the Apple Watch may overcome this obstacle. It’s also feasible that waterproof protective gear will eventually flood the market (like iPhone cases have). But we’re not there yet.\n

The final word

\nAlthough not many of us at Urban will be queuing up for an Apple Watch in coming months, Apple will no doubt move millions of units around the world. So if you’re a staunch Apple devotee or the trusty early technology adopter in your social circle, we’d love to hear what you think of it.", "DisableForSiteSearch": false, "EnableAMP": false, "Enabled": true, "ExpiryDate": "2099-12-11T11:00:00", "ExternalId": 3561, "Image": "/images/iWatch.png", "ItemCategories": null, "ItemCategoryIdList": null, "ItemTags": [ "Consumer Technology" ], "MetaDescription": "", "Name": "5 reasons only a fool would buy an Apple Watch", "OpenGraphProperties": "", "ReleaseDate": "2015-03-27T11:00:00", "SeoPriority": "", "SEOTitle": "", "MetaTitle": "", "ShowPageForSearchEngine": true, "SocialMetaTags": "", "UrlSlug": "5-reasons-only-a-fool-would-buy-an-apple-watch", "Weighting": 0, "parent": { "id": 1908, "url": "/blog", "parentid": -1, "lastupdateddate": "2019-03-14T02:07:17", "AMPContent": "", "Author_name": null, "Author_url": null, "Author": 0, "CanonicalLink": "", "CodeEditor": true, "CreatedByMemberId": 0, "Description": "", "DisableForSiteSearch": false, "EnableAMP": false, "Enabled": true, "ExpiryDate": "2099-12-11T14:21:30.6732117", "ExternalId": 0, "ItemCategories": null, "ItemCategoryIdList": null, "ItemTags": null, "MetaDescription": "", "Name": "Blog", "OpenGraphProperties": "", "ReleaseDate": "2019-02-26T14:21:30.6732117", "SeoPriority": "", "SEOTitle": "", "MetaTitle": "", "ShowPageForSearchEngine": true, "SocialMetaTags": "", "UrlSlug": "blog", "Weighting": 0 }, "params": { "filtersearch": "2014-09" } }

"Description": "Since 1930, Temple Beth Israel (TBI) has been shaping Jewish life in Melbourne. But from a technology perspective, its 25 year-old AV system was no longer meeting the needs of its increasingly savvy congregation.\n\nSo the time was right to provide the community with more flexible sanctuary spaces, effortless listening conditions and access to new-format services and events.\n\nIntegrating a hi-tech solution into a traditional, low-tech environment requires a champion. And at TBI, that champion is Rabbi Gersh. He’s not just happy to indulge the use of technology at his synagogue - he’s genuinely enthusiastic about its potential for the future of his synagogue.\n

The brief

\nThe brief was to create an audio-system with better speech intelligibility and music clarity –with the flexibility to mic up individuals, acoustic instruments and a choir. What’s more, all the technology had to be visually aesthetic and discreet.\n

Our approach

\nThe key for Urban Intelligence was to observe the synagogue’s routines and build those observations into pre-sets in the control system.\n\nBut not every aspect of the synagogue’s proceedings are predictable. Occasionally a multi-faith choir or a band will be invited to play. And until now, this was aesthetically messy and acoustically unpredictable.\n\nThe result is a meticulously planned and integrated AV system that represents a perfect fit for purpose.\n\n\"Prayers1\"\n

The solution

\nTBI’s new sound system provides high speech intelligibility to every seat in the house. The sound is natural and comfortable - with crystalline clarity.\n\nWhat’s more, synagogue staff can place wireless microphones and instruments where they want, confident the system will be stable and without feedback.  According to Urban Intelligence director, Lior Rauchberger:\n
'Congregants report that it’s the first time they’ve properly heard a service in 40 years!'
\nAnd according  to Rabbi Gersh:\n
‘You can be in any seat in the room and feel like you’re sitting a metre away from me. In fact, it feels like the sound is specifically yours. That really changes the experience.’
\nAnd for the hearing-impaired, the synagogue’s hearing augmentation system allows sound to be picked up through the PA system’s microphone - instead of their hearing aid’s internal one. Listeners enjoy clear signals without any background noise, every time.\n\nBut what use is a great sound system unless it’s intuitive and simple to use? Well, Urban Intelligence wouldn’t have it any other way.\n\nTBI’s custom-built iPad interface allows staff to run almost every aspect of a service without technical operators.\n\nAs Rabbi Gersh explains:\n
‘The ability to go into our digital system from an iPad makes us adaptable while running. That’s been extraordinary. And it’s changed everything we do. I recently stood next to our lectern and saw an elderly lady in the second row straining to hear her grandchild publicly reading from the Torah. Without anyone noticing, I reached for the iPad and just went tap, tap tap. The lady began leaning back until she was relaxed with a beaming smile on her face.’
\nIntegral to the project was also a video capture system that’s a breeze to use. Every Saturday, Rabbi Gersh presses ‘GO’ on the vision streaming and recording and the main camera (wide, front shot) streams live from the synagogue’s website.\n\nWhen he presses ‘STOP’, the video recordings are backed up and accessible to the synagogue’s front office. The feeds can then be saved onto a USB stick and presented to families who may choose to have their special events edited and post-produced.\n\nRauchberger explains:\n
‘The audio from these recordings is exceptional. With any high-gain mics there’s always the spectre of background hiss, but the capture and sync at TBI is of an unbelievably high quality,’
\nAlso, by special request of Rabbi Gersh, he has a BlueTooth connection which allows him to stream music (or anything he likes) straight from his smartphone. ‘I keep it off except for when I need it. Otherwise teenagers in the congregation may discover it during a service - and I’d hate to think what they might choose to play,’ jokes Rabbi Gersh.\n\n\"Prayers3\"\n

The final word from Rabbie Gersh Lazarow

\n
‘A heartfelt thanks to Urban Intelligence for bringing age-old traditions and new-age technology together seamlessly at TBI. The team interpreted our brief accurately and their approach was respectful and consultative through every stage - from design and installation to training and handover. Thanks to Urban Intelligence, our community now receives best possible audio and visual experience at our synagogue.’

"Description": "Imagine catching the train or driving to work without needing your keys or wallet. Imagine entering your office’s secure car park without keying in a passcode. Imagine grabbing your morning coffee or snack from a vending machine without rummaging for change.\n\nWell, there’s no need to imagine anymore. The technology exists. And it’s called Near Field Communication (NFC).\n\nSo, what exactly is NFC?\n\nNFC is a form of contactless communication that allows you to achieve everyday tasks with a quick wave of your smartphone.\n\nDesigned for devices within close proximity, NFC uses electromagnetic radio fields to exchange data from one compatible device to another. No need for them to touch. And no need for users to fumble through multiple steps to set up a connection.\n\nWhy we’re excited about NFC?\n
    \n\t
  • For businesses: NFC technology means faster transaction times. Faster transaction means less waiting in lines. Less waiting in lines means HAPPIER customers!
  • \n\t
  • For consumers: NFC technology means no cards or cash to carry around. No cards or cash to carry around means less chance of lost or stolen items. Less chance of lost or stolen items means leaving the house is less stressful - and a lot more fun!
  • \n
\nHow will NFC change your everyday life?\n\nThere are many ways you will enjoy NFC in your daily life.\n
    \n\t
  • On public transport: Wave your phone to pass through turnstiles. Or tap your phone at an information kiosk for up-to-date schedules and delays.
  • \n\t
  • At the supermarket: Stop to buy groceries, redeem coupons and earn reward points with a single wave at the checkout.
  • \n\t
  • At the movies: Purchase tickets, gain entry to the cinemas and interact with smart posters for information about upcoming films. And before the movie starts, grab your drink and popcorn by waving your phone at the snack counter.
  • \n\t
  • On holiday: Board the plane without a boarding pass. Check in to your hotel without the paperwork. And access hotel rooms without keys or magnetic swipe cards that are easily lost!
  • \n\t
  • Hanging out with friends: Share games, links and other information with friends by bumping phones. You can even send money to each other!

"Description": "We are pleased to welcome Michael O’Connor to the Urban Intelligence team as our new Technology Estimator.\n\nMichael is already getting his hands dirty designing, estimating and working with our commercial and residential clients to help them achieve optimal technology solutions.\n\nWith a strong background in technical sales and marketing within the AV space, Michael is excited to be back in a solutions integration role. He relishes the opportunity to rely on his technical and business skills in equal measure.\n
I am honoured to be joining the Urban Intelligence team. I have had my eye on them for some time now – mainly because they are known to be very forward-thinking. And so far, so good! It’s as refreshing here as I had imagined.'
\nMichael is currently completing his MBA at the Australian Institute of Business. And when he’s not working or studying, Michael loves keeping physically active and hanging out with his two young sons. (Two activities which we imagine are not mutually exclusive. That right Michael?)\n\nMichael can be contacted on 9514 6014 or [email protected]", "DisableForSiteSearch": false, "EnableAMP": false, "Enabled": true, "ExpiryDate": "2099-12-11T11:00:00", "ExternalId": 2941, "Image": "/images/michael-oconnor-copy.jpg", "ItemCategories": null, "ItemCategoryIdList": null, "ItemTags": [ "Urban Intelligence News" ], "MetaDescription": "", "Name": "Meet Michael O’Connor", "OpenGraphProperties": "", "ReleaseDate": "2014-12-14T11:00:00", "SeoPriority": "", "SEOTitle": "", "MetaTitle": "", "ShowPageForSearchEngine": true, "SocialMetaTags": "", "UrlSlug": "meet-michael-o-connor", "Weighting": 0, "parent": { "id": 1908, "url": "/blog", "parentid": -1, "lastupdateddate": "2019-03-14T02:07:17", "AMPContent": "", "Author_name": null, "Author_url": null, "Author": 0, "CanonicalLink": "", "CodeEditor": true, "CreatedByMemberId": 0, "Description": "", "DisableForSiteSearch": false, "EnableAMP": false, "Enabled": true, "ExpiryDate": "2099-12-11T14:21:30.6732117", "ExternalId": 0, "ItemCategories": null, "ItemCategoryIdList": null, "ItemTags": null, "MetaDescription": "", "Name": "Blog", "OpenGraphProperties": "", "ReleaseDate": "2019-02-26T14:21:30.6732117", "SeoPriority": "", "SEOTitle": "", "MetaTitle": "", "ShowPageForSearchEngine": true, "SocialMetaTags": "", "UrlSlug": "blog", "Weighting": 0 }, "params": { "filtersearch": "2014-09" } }

We’ve scoured the app store so you don’t have to and come up with the 5 most unique apps to increase your productivity using your smart phone or tablet.

\n

\n\n

1. Swizzle

\n

If your emails are getting lost amongst the clutter of junk promotions that you signed up for, you are a candidate for Swizzle. This great app helps you to de-clutter your email quickly.  You have two options with Swizzle, it can collate your promotions, deals and newsletters into one weekly Swizzle digest, or you can unsubscribe from them in one easy process. Organising your emails is no longer a chore, because Swizzle makes it simple.

\n\n

2. [email protected]

\n

Have you noticed how music lifts your mood at work? Well, the neuroscientists at UCLA have proven it. In conjunction with [email protected] they have developed a list of songs that are scientifically proven to boost your concentration, increase your productivity and help you to be less distracted. [email protected] is a great app for the office.

\n\n

3. Sociidot

\n

It was really tempting to choose a task-setting app, but let’s think bigger picture. What are your grand goals? Most people live day to day with the tasks that they need to do, but why not reflect on what you want to do and what motivates you to do it. In Sociidot you set goals and create a Story for each goal. You set Dots (which are tasks) that you can do one by one to bring the goal closer to fruition. You assign each Story and each Dot with a due date so that you stay focused. Sociidot encourages you to use photos to help you to visualise goals. Thing big with Sociidot.

\n\n

4. RescueTime

\n

Where did the day go? If you get to the end of the day and ask yourself this question, then RescueTime has the answer. It runs in the background on your device and produces a report on where you have spent your time. RescueTime will tell you which websites, apps and programs have consumed your time and how long you spent on them. You can then reflect on how productive your day has been and what you achieved.

\n\n

5. ABUKAI

\n

If you get to the end of the month and bring out a wad of receipts from your wallets, you are managing your expenses the hard way. Check out ABUKAI. It’s a smart and simple way to keep track of your expenses. Just snap a pic of your receipt in ABUKAI. The app creates an expense report with your receipts attached as a PDF. It can be synced with your accounting software, making it incredibly functional. Because every receipt counts, try ABUKAI.

We are not a reseller of Pexip; we’re just sold on the idea. It’s a simple software solution that’s affordable and integrates with your existing video conferencing hardware.

\n

It’s cross-platform, completely agnostic and pay per month. It can bridge the gap between video conference systems; such as: Lync and Lifesize, like a bridge.

\n

Offering BYOD (bring your own device) to provide video to everyone – anywhere. Participates can also use their device to view the presentation and control the meeting.

\n

Pexip is virtualized, so that it can be installed anywhere in the world without the costs normally associated with hardware solutions. You can increase your conferencing capacity and even upgrade your meeting room hardware without tipping the budget.  If we could help you to maximise your budget, we’d suggest you use Pexip and spend the rest on supportive meeting room technologies, such as:

\n

- Audio Upgrades

\n\n
    \n\t
  • Professional microphone systems
  • \n\t
  • High end echo cancellation
  • \n
\n

- Collaborative technologies

\n\n
    \n\t
  • Wireless presentation
  • \n\t
  • Voice recognition and room activation
  • \n
\n

- Room automation

\n

- Control Systems

\n

- iPad control

\n

- Lighting control

\n

We would be happy to meet with you and discuss your conferencing needs.
