What is Netflix anyway?

\nNetflix is the world’s leading internet subscription service for TV shows and movies. It has over 57 million subscribers across 50 countries. In fact, it is so popular in the US, that 30% of the country’s total internet traffic in peak times is just from Netflix!\n

How does Netflix work?

\nPut simply, with Netflix, you can watch what you want, when you want.\n\nYou simply select your favourite TV show or movie and stream it to any internet-connected device with a Netflix application - your TV, computer, tablet or smartphone.\n\nPause, rewind and forward at your leisure. And never sit through an ad break again.\n

Is streaming TV and movie content new in Australia?

\nNo, it’s not. Established service providers such as Ezyflix and Quickflix have been here for several years. But 2015 is the year for all the big players.\n\nThe Australian launch of Netflix was closely preceded by the launch of Presto (a collaboration between Foxtel and Channel 7) and Stan (a Channel 9 and Fairfax partnership).\n\nHowever, Netflix has the advantage of strong brand recognition in Australia, largely due to news coverage around many Australians illegally - or ‘creatively’ - accessing the US service before it officially arrived.\n

What does Netflix mean for the free-to-air and pay television market?

\nThere’s no denying that the arrival of Netflix in Australia is part of a long-term shift in viewing habits. And that means Australia's free-to-air and pay television operators are now under legitimate threat.\n\nIn the next 10-20 years, very few of us will be ‘tuning in’ at particular times to watch our favourite shows. According to Netflix Chief Executive, Reed Hastings ‘…most viewing in most countries will be over the internet.’\n\nThe evolution is no different to the music industry. We’ve moving from owning (LPs, tapes, CDs)… to downloading (MP3s)… to streaming (Spotfiy, Pandora, GooglePlay).\n

What will you be able to watch on Netflix?

\nAccording to Netflix, Australians will be able to enjoy a whole world of entertainment. Award-winning TV series, documentaries, kids programming, movie blockbusters – you name it.\n\nBut unless you’re a House of Cards binge-watcher, you may want to do your research. According to critics, Australian Netflix service has almost 7,000 fewer titles than it offers in the US. What’s more, with 1,250 titles on offer in Australia, Netflix offers the fewest choices when compared to Stan, Presto and Ezyflix. Quickflix has the largest selection with 2,300 titles.\n

So how much does Netflix cost?

\nNetflix is offering the basic standard definition service at $8.99 per month. The two-stream high-definition plan costs $11.99. And four-stream 4K ultra-definition plan is $14.99.\n\nComparatively, Stan offers high definition streaming at $10 a month and. And Presto, which only offers content in standard definition, charges $9.99 per month.\n\nBut streaming video costs more than your monthly subscription. It’s also about the data you consume through your internet plan and your broadband capabilities.\n

Is Netflix or any other internet subscription service right for you?

\nIf you answer ‘yes’ to one or more of the following questions, it may be worth considering.\n
    \n\t
  • Does your busy lifestyle prevent you from watching TV at conventional times?
  • \n\t
  • Are the viewing choices on your Foxtel subscription getting limited and repetitive?
  • \n\t
  • Do you crave top quality, high-definition viewing?
  • \n\t
  • Are you fed up with ‘no escape’ television advertising?
  • \n\t
  • Do you enjoy ‘binge-watching’ quality TV shows?
  • \n\t
  • Do you already have an Apple TV or LG TV?
  • \n

5 reasons only a fool would buy an Apple Watch

"Description": "We all know the frustration of trying to talk to someone while they’re continually checking their phone. On the rudeness scale, it’s probably surpassed by only one thing: checking the time.\n\n\n\nWell, thanks to Apple, you can now offend your friends in one fell swoop - with the all new Apple Watch.\n\nApple's first wearable gadget is launching in Australia on 24 April 2015. Starting at AUD$499, the Apple Watch shares many functionalities with the iPhone: it receives calls, displays emails, stores music and receives social media notifications.\n\nSo if constantly reaching into your pocket for your device is driving you batty, problem solved.\n\nBut if that’s not enough of a reason to purchase Apple’s latest gadget, we’re afraid you’re out of luck. Because we can’t think of many more.\n\nIn fact, we can only think of reasons why NOT to get one. Here’s just five of them.\n

1. You need an iPhone to operate it

\nThe Apple Watch is not self-sufficient. You need an iPhone (5c, 5s, 6 or 6 Plus) to operate most of its functionalities.\n\nThat’s because many Apple Watch apps are just displays for things running from your iPhone. And many key features aren't available if it’s not paired to an iOS device. For example, it doesn’t have its own GPS receiver or camera – which means it can’t map your movements or take happy cat snaps all by itself.\n\nIt would be remiss of us not to mention that the Apple Watch does have some apps and functionalities that can operate without an iPhone. Like telling the time, for example.\n

2. You’ll also need an iPhone (or a Swiss bank account) to afford it

\nAlthough the entry-level model may not seem exorbitant at AUD$499, it needs an iPhone to operate it. And at the other end of the spectrum, the top-tier 18-carat gold edition will set you back around AUD$24,000.\n\nAlthough many of us prefer to spend that sum of money on a car or mortgage, some families consider an expensive watch a good investment. Their Cartier, Rolex or Bvlgari is passed from generation to generation – growing in value and sentimentality over time.\n\nBut a $24,000 Apple Watch? We’re not convinced. Surely it’ll be a matter of time until the next version is released, demoting your current model to the bottom drawer alongside your once-cherished iPod nano and iPhone 4.\n

3. You’ll have another gadget to charge at night. High five to that.

\nIn the good old Nokia days, we only charged our phones once or twice a week. But thanks to Apple, we’re now all too happy to charge them every night – or even more often.\n\nWill Apple really be able to convince us to charge our watch every night too?\n\nThe Apple Watch comes with about 18 hours of battery life over a normal day. So you’ll definitely need to find a home for it on your multiple adapter when you tuck into bed each night.\n\nWhat’s next then? Charging our shoes, belts and eyeglasses? (Oh, wait a minute. Google actually had a go at that last one, didn’t they?)\n

4. Perfect for (very rich and naive) fitness junkies

\nAccording to Apple, their watch is the perfect companion for health and fitness junkies. But is it enough of a selling point to clinch the deal on its own?\n\nUnlike any other device, the Apple Watch can measure all the ways we move - such as walking the dog, climbing the stairs or playing with our kids. Wait a minute. Aren’t there plenty of fitness bands out there (such as Fitbit) that already do this - for a fraction of the price?\n\nOkay, so the Apple Watch can also keep track of when we stand up, encouraging us to keep moving. Phew. There’s really nothing else that can do\n

5. It’s not waterproof

\nSo we’ve already established that your Apple Watch will help you keep track of your fitness activities. Unless, that is, those activities involve water.\n\nThe Apple Watch is water-resistant, but not water-proof. And that means you shouldn’t even wear in shower - let alone go swimming with it.\n\nNo doubt future models of the Apple Watch may overcome this obstacle. It’s also feasible that waterproof protective gear will eventually flood the market (like iPhone cases have). But we’re not there yet.\n

The final word

\nAlthough not many of us at Urban will be queuing up for an Apple Watch in coming months, Apple will no doubt move millions of units around the world. So if you’re a staunch Apple devotee or the trusty early technology adopter in your social circle, we’d love to hear what you think of it.", "DisableForSiteSearch": false, "EnableAMP": false, "Enabled": true, "ExpiryDate": "2099-12-11T11:00:00", "ExternalId": 3561, "Image": "/images/iWatch.png", "ItemCategories": null, "ItemCategoryIdList": null, "ItemTags": [ "Consumer Technology" ], "MetaDescription": "", "Name": "5 reasons only a fool would buy an Apple Watch", "OpenGraphProperties": "", "ReleaseDate": "2015-03-27T11:00:00", "SeoPriority": "", "SEOTitle": "", "MetaTitle": "", "ShowPageForSearchEngine": true, "SocialMetaTags": "", "UrlSlug": "5-reasons-only-a-fool-would-buy-an-apple-watch", "Weighting": 0, "parent": { "id": 1908, "url": "/blog", "parentid": -1, "lastupdateddate": "2019-03-14T02:07:17", "AMPContent": "", "Author_name": null, "Author_url": null, "Author": 0, "CanonicalLink": "", "CodeEditor": true, "CreatedByMemberId": 0, "Description": "", "DisableForSiteSearch": false, "EnableAMP": false, "Enabled": true, "ExpiryDate": "2099-12-11T14:21:30.6732117", "ExternalId": 0, "ItemCategories": null, "ItemCategoryIdList": null, "ItemTags": null, "MetaDescription": "", "Name": "Blog", "OpenGraphProperties": "", "ReleaseDate": "2019-02-26T14:21:30.6732117", "SeoPriority": "", "SEOTitle": "", "MetaTitle": "", "ShowPageForSearchEngine": true, "SocialMetaTags": "", "UrlSlug": "blog", "Weighting": 0 }, "params": { "filtersearch": "" } }

We’ve scoured the app store so you don’t have to and come up with the 5 most unique apps to increase your productivity using your smart phone or tablet.

\n

\n\n

1. Swizzle

\n

If your emails are getting lost amongst the clutter of junk promotions that you signed up for, you are a candidate for Swizzle. This great app helps you to de-clutter your email quickly.  You have two options with Swizzle, it can collate your promotions, deals and newsletters into one weekly Swizzle digest, or you can unsubscribe from them in one easy process. Organising your emails is no longer a chore, because Swizzle makes it simple.

\n\n

2. [email protected]

\n

Have you noticed how music lifts your mood at work? Well, the neuroscientists at UCLA have proven it. In conjunction with [email protected] they have developed a list of songs that are scientifically proven to boost your concentration, increase your productivity and help you to be less distracted. [email protected] is a great app for the office.

\n\n

3. Sociidot

\n

It was really tempting to choose a task-setting app, but let’s think bigger picture. What are your grand goals? Most people live day to day with the tasks that they need to do, but why not reflect on what you want to do and what motivates you to do it. In Sociidot you set goals and create a Story for each goal. You set Dots (which are tasks) that you can do one by one to bring the goal closer to fruition. You assign each Story and each Dot with a due date so that you stay focused. Sociidot encourages you to use photos to help you to visualise goals. Thing big with Sociidot.

\n\n

4. RescueTime

\n

Where did the day go? If you get to the end of the day and ask yourself this question, then RescueTime has the answer. It runs in the background on your device and produces a report on where you have spent your time. RescueTime will tell you which websites, apps and programs have consumed your time and how long you spent on them. You can then reflect on how productive your day has been and what you achieved.

\n\n

5. ABUKAI

\n

If you get to the end of the month and bring out a wad of receipts from your wallets, you are managing your expenses the hard way. Check out ABUKAI. It’s a smart and simple way to keep track of your expenses. Just snap a pic of your receipt in ABUKAI. The app creates an expense report with your receipts attached as a PDF. It can be synced with your accounting software, making it incredibly functional. Because every receipt counts, try ABUKAI.

WOW. That’s our first thought when Apple unveiled iOS8.

\n\n\nHere’s your quick guide to the top changes that we think you’ll really like\n\n1. You will be able answer voice calls on your Mac or iPad if you can’t get to your iPhone or it’s being charged\n\n2. "Description": "Are you in the market for a smartphone? Chances are you are choosing between an Apple or a Samsung phone. So, we compared the two flagships phones in their range to give you a winner.\n\n\n

1. Let’s start with Design

\nThe Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is plastic vs. Apple’s iPhone which is aluminum with polished edges. In terms of weight, the iPhone is lighter – weighing in at 113 grams, whilst the Galaxy is 144 grams (27% heavier). This is due to the larger display – an asset in the display category but making it a heavier phone and difficult to use one handed. The winner for design is the…iPhone 5s.\n

2. Next, the all important Display

\nIt’s a great experience on the Galaxy S5 when looking at photos, videos and surfing the web, thanks to the large screen (5.1 inches versus 4 inches on the iPhone 5s). Whilst Apple delivers more accurate colours, the colour saturation lets it down. From a practical perspective it means that on the Galaxy S5 colours are bolder and stronger. The winner this round is the…Galaxy 5S.\n\n3. Which one sounds better? Let’s talk about Audio\n\nThe iPhone 5s’ bottom-mounted speaker has great volume and clarity, compared to the Galaxy S5. When it comes to loudness, the iPhone hits 82 decibels versus the Galaxy at 73 decibels. The winner for best audio is the…iPhone 5s.\n

4. The final category is the Interface

\nSamsung’s interface has been given a big overhaul for the S5. It’s a case of feature packed to the max and tonnes of options. Apple, however, seems to have a better approach to user experience with their interface. Most people can pick up an iPhone and start using it without reading a manual; it’s that easy to use.\n\nIf you are using your phone as a phone and need simple life and work applications then the iPhone does it all. If you are avoiding buying a tablet then the functionality of the Galaxy S5 will win you over. But if we are purely looking at the interface rather than what the phone can actually do – then Apple’s iPhone 5s is the winner here.\n\nAn important note – iPhone users swear by their iPhone and Galaxy users feel their phone is superior to an iPhone. Ultimately it’s about what you need the phone to do and what’s going to be a more convenient option for you.", "DisableForSiteSearch": false, "EnableAMP": false, "Enabled": true, "ExpiryDate": "2099-12-11T11:00:00", "ExternalId": 2488, "Image": "/images/smart-phone-comparison.jpeg", "ItemCategories": null, "ItemCategoryIdList": null, "ItemTags": [ "Consumer Technology" ], "MetaDescription": "", "Name": "Samsung or Apple? What's in store for the iPhone6?

What’s next for the iPhone? It’s one of the most anticipated technologies to be released this year. If you look at the difference between the iPhone 5 and 5c versus the iPhone 4s – the question begs – will Apple actually innovate or make slight changes again.

What’s next for the iPhone? It’s one of the most anticipated technologies to be released this year. If you look at the difference between the iPhone 5 and 5c versus the iPhone 4s – the question begs – will Apple actually innovate or make slight changes again.

\n

\n

There is contention amongst techies that this is actually the iPhone 8 – had Apple not done half releases such as iPhone 4 and then the iPhone 4s. Either way, the excitement is building for what will be known as the iPhone 6.

\n\n

What will it include? Here’s our guess…

\n

With the massive competition that Apple face in the Asian market, it’s a fair bet that they will innovate – out of necessity. Samsung and HTC have new releases this year as well, so the pressure is on Apple to do something to wow their loyal following and encourage people to switch to the iPhone.

\n

The online betting community has money on the following new iPhone 6 features:

\n\n
    \n\t
  • Rumoured to be thinner than the current iPhone
  • \n\t
  • Bigger screen – with the option of a 4.7 inch or 5.5
  • \n\t
  • Gesture control to replace the home
  • \n\t
  • Clearer photos from optical image stabiliser technology
  • \n
\n

There are long odds on the following features being included in the iPhone 6 (or perhaps iPhone 7 and

\n\n
    \n\t
  • Curved glass
  • \n\t
  • Hidden sensors and camera
  • \n
\n

To see what Apple has in store for the iPhone 6, we will need to wait until September 2014 or later to find out. We will review the iPhone 6 as soon as we get our hands on one.

\nNot all devices come with a power socket charger, most just come with the USB cord. It’s frustrating and obviously designed to teach families how to share.  It just doesn’t work.
